Prologue
The weather of the day was nice according to the blue sky and the sun that kindly shone, brightened and heated the earth below it. Despite the hot weather, the street was full with humans walking, running, talking and basically doing their respective businesses or activities - especially since it was lunch time. Every soul was rushing to fill their respective stomachs.
Among this sea of humans, there was a particular young woman who was running madly – she bumped every passerby that she passed and did not bother to apologize – as if her life depended on it. Her 3 inches high heels produced a loud thud for every step she took. People who watch this scene only shook their heads and muttered ‘crazy’. But when they looked closely, her face was full of worries, fears and panics.
A loud ring successfully silenced the noisy and crowded restaurant. As in reflex action, every eye inside the restaurant turned toward the source. Immediately, the owner of the phone apologized and excused herself into the toilet.
“Hello. Matsuo Izumi speaking,” she said as she pressed the ‘answer’ button on her hand phone. Her calm face turned into a deep frown when she was greeted by a faint sound of crying in the background.
“Matsuo-san-” the other line said, “your son-“
Sweats trickled down her forehead and her feet were throbbing – thanks to the 3 inches high heels. What kind of person invented these things that make women suffered? That was her usual complaints but at the moment, she was too anxious to feel the pain. She ran into a kindergarten and headed straight toward a green door with the label “PRINCIPAL”.
Out of anxious, she turned the door knob and opened the door harshly than necessary. There, she saw a boy sitting on the seat provided on the corner of the room. He was staring at the floor. His hair and shirt were messy and his jacket and bag was on the chair beside him. Next to him was a crying boy – same condition as the first boy – only to be comforted by a middle aged woman who she assumed was his mother. The woman then was glaring at the first boy.
“Kyuu,” Izumi cried and ran toward the first boy. Kyuu looked up at her only a second then lowered his head again. Her heart broke to pieces when she saw his bruised face. She squatted in front of her son and caressed his swollen cheeks. Kyuu refused to look at his mom and kept his head low.
“Matsuo-san-” The principal began but was interrupted by a loud cold voice.
“You are his mother?” The woman snickered and looked at Izumi from head to toe disgustedly “Like mother like son. Wild. No wonder he doesn’t have a father. I bet she doesn’t even know which one was the father,” she muttered under the breath but loud enough for her to hear.
Izumi bit her lower lip to control her boiling blood. She was used to those words since she heard them frequently since 5 years ago. It was nothing new. People will automatically attacked her with such words when they knew that she was a single mother of a 5 year-old-boy at the aged of 26.
“We fou-” the principal once again began but was interrupted by the woman.
“Your son beat my son. Is that how you teach him?” the woman said with an accused tone.
Izumi was now fuming. She stood up and faced the woman to snap at her but dropped that intention and instead she inhaled deeply to keep her sanity because losing her temper won’t solve this problem and it would be very immature of her. “I apologize for what my son did to your son madam.” She said politely – forcefully – and bow her head. “But I believe there must be a reason for that”.
“The reason is obvious. He has no father and-” she stopped her speech when Kyuu suddenly jumped from his seat and ran out from the office.
“KYUU!!” Izumi shouted. She grabbed her son’s bag and jacket and bowed to the principal before she ran after her son - didn't missed the sneers from the middle-aged woman. “KYUU!!” his small feet made him impossible to run any faster which enable Izumi to catch him up. She grabbed her son’s hand to stop him from running. She kneeled down and turned her son to face her. “Baby~” for the umpteenth time that day, her heart broke. Kyuu was crying.
“What they said is true, right mom?” he began between sobs “I don’t have daddy. The photo is not my daddy. He is a singer. That is why he never comes back. Mama is a liar! I hate mama!!!” with that, he crouched on the floor crying his heart out. Slowly, tears streamed down Izumi’s cheeks as she hugged her son.
