Chapter Two:
When They Asked For Him

Sakura arrived home very late that evening.
She kicked her heels off, leading herself to the living room. Her house wasn’t that big or small. It was perfect for her and the twins to live in though; she would have preferred living in a much bigger house. It consisted of three bedrooms where one of it acted as a guest room for the time being. It used to be a room that her father seldom used when he came to visit her and the twins but now, it wasn’t occupied anymore.
She found a man sitting by the sofa with a laptop on his lap. He was completely indulged with his work that he hadn’t noticed that Sakura was standing infront of him. It took a tap by the shoulder to make him finally noticing her.
“Thanks Mako-kun. Again. I’m really grateful you are doing this for me,” Sakura gave a friendly peck on his cheek.
Hasegawa Makoto was one of her longest friends since high school. They had been stuck together like glue since she got married. He was a wonderful person and very reliable when it came to helping the twins.
“I’m glad to help. I love having them around me. They are nice kids,” he commented, starting to pack his stuff.
“I’m really sorry that it got really late,” apologised Sakura, also helping out with his stuff.
“It’s understandable.”
“Do you want anything to drink before you leave?” Sakura offered, ready to leave for the kitchen.
“No, it’s OK. I need to head back now. Bye, Sakura. I’ll pick up the twins tomorrow.”
“Wait, Mako-kun. I need to ask something before you leave,” Sakura turned to where he was.
Makoto raised an eyebrow, “Yeah?”
“I need you to do some digging on Aihara. She, um, called today,” her voice sounded hesitant but she kept a firm gaze on him.
He nodded and left for the door.
She threw herself on to the sofa, massaging her temple thoroughly. A massive headache started attacking so she stood and walked to the kitchen to get two pills of paracetamol. It was never good to always depend on drugs and a good rest seemed to be great but she couldn’t help it. She gobbled it down her gut with a glass of lukewarm water before going to her bedroom.
She turned a corner and continued walking down the corridor and stopped halfway hearing giggles coming from the first room she reached. She couldn’t help but smile. She suddenly opened the door softly. She found a pair of twins sitting on the floor, each with their blankets around.
The twins had nice hazelnuts locks and mesmerizing amber eyes which were different from hers. The twins stood three foot tall beside her and hadn’t notice her yet.
“Why aren’t you two in bed?” she leaned by the doorframe with her arms crossed in front of her chest.
“Mommy!” both of them said in unison, turning their heads around to see their mother.
“It’s getting late. You should probably be in bed by now, you know,” Sakura said, picking up each of her sons into her arms. They both snuggled into her, placing their little arms around her neck for some kind of support.
“So, did the both of you behave well when Makoto-kun was here?” Sakura asked, kissing both by the cheeks.
“We did!” Hikaru answered immediately. He had a wide smile across his face and wasn’t able to contain his happiness any longer. Sakura knew that she had to put them down because once they started talking something excited, they would usually bounced up and down without stopping.
“Mommy, Mako-kun brought us to a zoo today!” Hikaru said excitedly, bouncing on the bed now. “We saw a lion too!”
Sakura laughed warmly, “I see. So, was it fun, Kaoru? I’m sure you liked the animals very much do you?”
“Yes! Yes! I really love the animals, mommy! They were so cool!” This time it was Kaoru’s turn to shriek in excitement. Usually, Hikaru would do all the talking about all the places they were brought by Makoto. And since it was the zoo, a place where they get to see animals, it would be the opposite because Kaoru had a thing for animals.
“So, did you both like it?” Sakura questioned them.
“Yes!” Both said in unison.
“And did you both say your ‘thank you’s at Mako-kun?
“We did!”
Sakura smiled again, “OK then. Bedtime now.”
“But mommy!” Whined Hikaru.
“I know. That’s why you two are sleeping with me today,” Sakura beamed. The twins jumped on to Sakura who collapsed onto the bed with them.
XOXO
“Ok, I’m turning off the lights now,” Sakura reached for the lamp near her bed. She switched the light off and the room was pitched dark but the moon lit up brightly from outside.
She slipped in to her bed and comfortably adjusted her position. The twins slept together on the other side of the bed. She planted each boy with a kiss on their forehead pulling the cover up but she felt a soft nudge by the waist.
She turned to face the twins, “what is it, boys? It’s late already.”
Her eyes bored into them, feeling the sense of tiredness getting the good of her. She needed to sleep but the twins seem to have a different idea than her.
“Umm, mommy”, Hikaru spoke.
“Yes, Hikaru? What is it?”
“We want to know what our daddy is like,” asked Kaoru innocently.
Sakura felt completely stunned. She turned to face where the twins were, “You want to know what daddy is like?”
Both nodded.
Sakura sighed but formed a small smile, “Your daddy was a very handsome man, just like the both of you.” The twins giggled.
“He likes oranges very much and spaghetti too!” She told them fondly, remembering as if it happened just yesterday.
“Just like us!” beamed Hikaru.
“What else, mommy?” asked Kaoru.
“Let’s see,” Sakura thought. She began to sit up.
“He liked to tickle people,” Sakura started to tickle the twins by the stomach and soon the room filled with laughter.
“Does he like animals?” Kaoru curiously asked.
“I think he does,” she answered, stopping the tickling.
“Then, why did daddy left? Doesn’t daddy love mommy?” Hikaru suddenly asked.
Sakura froze, trying to consider how to answer her sons. “I don’t know why he left.”
Sakura quickly switched the subject, “Please go to sleep, boys.”
“OK!”
“Goodnight mommy!”
“Yes, goodnight, boys.”
The question was still lingering in her mind. “Doesn’t daddy love mommy?”
Heck, she doesn’t even know the answer.
XOXO
