Chapter Three:
He Finally Appeared
Author:
SAKU
She would have loved to spend the day with her twins today but duties call. It hurt her to see the disappointment in their looks but she couldn’t have done anything. She knew they really wanted her to be with them today on this special day. She closed her eyes and thought of the twins. They would have been happier if she wasn’t so busy with work and just spend a lot of quality time with them.
(Flashback)
“I’m really, really sorry, you two!” Sakura apologized for the second time that day over dinner. They were having spaghetti today, one of the family’s favourite. Sakura had gone home early that night after struggling to finish the last file.
“But mommy! It’s very special tomorrow!” whined Hikaru with the puppy eyes. Sakura didn’t dare to look at him as the puppy eyes that Hikaru gave would always gave her a certain pitiful effect.
“I know, dear. I’m really sorry again,” Sakura couldn’t help but apologized once more. Hikaru was on the verge to cry and Sakura was already feeling helpless.
As if on cue, Kaoru spoke, turning to his brother, “Hikaru, don’t worry.” And from there, Kaoru whispered very softly into Hikaru’s ear, “I have a plan.”
Immediately, Hikaru stopped whining. He turned to his brother, raising an eyebrow. He was clearly confused but as he saw the confident look on Kaoru’s face, he began to smirk.
(End of Flashback)
Sakura gave an exasperated sigh. She needed to make it up to them. They have long waited for today and she just couldn’t be there for them. Sakura rested her head onto her office desk and thought of banging her head but knew that it wouldn’t solve her problems.
The files and papers that were lying around the floor never seemed to finish. She needed a better organizing plan and this wasn’t the time to tidy things up. She wanted to finish checking and signing the papers but thinking of her twins made her lazy all of the sudden. If she could wish for something today, it would be spending the time with her twins and just relax, maybe sleep in for the day.
She shook her head, ‘This isn’t the time to do so. The sooner I do this, the quicker I go home.’
Putting one file on the desk, she opened it and then took a glance at the photo which was infront of her. Suddenly, she smiled fondly at them. She then remembered what they had done to her this morning.
(Flashback)
“Mommy! Wake up!” Sakura turned, fluttering one eye open. She saw Kaoru jumping on the bed excitedly. She groaned and went back to sleep.
She murmured, “Just give me 5 minutes.”
“Wake up, mommy!” Kaoru was now trying to pull the covers down but to his dismay, he fell down while doing so. Sakura giggled at the sight of him after sitting. She rubbed the sleep out of her and pulled Kaoru into her arms.
She kissed his hair, “Morning, Kaoru. Where’s Hikaru?” She searched for the boy seeing him nowhere in sight.
“I’m right here! Kao-ru! Help me!” Sakura turned to where the voice came from. By the door, Hikaru was struggling to hold onto the tray he was carrying.
Bouncing off from the bed, Kaoru took the other end of the tray from Hikaru. Together, they placed the tray on the bed infront of Sakura. She simply raised one eyebrow curiously.
“This is for you mommy!” said Hikaru, letting himself sit on Sakura’s knees.
Kaoru went over behind Sakura, hugging from behind, “Yeah and mommy—”
“Happy Mommy Day!”
(End of Flashback)
“Thanks boys,” it was barely audible but she could feel the tears coming down again. She had the perfect life with the twins and she loved them very much. They were her everything. And today, she was determined to finish all her work so she could get back home as soon as she can.
XOXO
How many years had he not returned? For others, it would have been yesterday but his was a different case. He didn’t want to remember what he had here in Japan—at all. Though everything was new to him now that he was here, it didn’t bring him any comfort or whatsoever, amazed by the new environment. Of course he’d still remembered where the streets were and his company and all that sorts but he just didn’t want to remember where he’d used to live; it pained him deeply.
His thoughts were interrupted by a simple ‘ding’ the elevator had made, indicating that he reached a floor. He knew it wasn’t his noticing how short the journey was. He was about to press the button when a pair of boys frantically rushed towards the elevator.
“Wait!”
Automatically, his hand went unto the double doors that were about to close completely. He held onto it until the boys had jumped into the elevators before it closed.
The boys stumbled, falling butt first onto the floor, ignoring him. It looked as if they had run in a marathon from all the sweating and puffing. He managed a smile witnessing the boys but didn’t say anything.
“We actually made it!” said one of them; the left one, pulling the shirt out that was tucked neatly. He looked like any other boy about the height just below his waist.
“Hey, that man is staring at us,” whispered the one at the right. That made him chuckled.
The one on the left stood up, “Thank you, mister.”
He smiled dazzling down at them, “You’re welcome.”
He soon realized that the both of them were twins with identical hazelnut coloured hair and soaring brownish with a hint of golden coloured eyes. Their hair was messy in a good way and doesn’t look like it needed to be tamed down.
He was staring at them for long and cleared his throat, “Which floor?” he asked.
“The top one”, both chorused, showing their pearly white teeth.
The boys started to talk and he couldn’t help but listened to their conversation; though he knew that it wasn’t a good idea to be eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation.
“Kaoru, are you sure this is OK?” said the boy on the left.
The boy on the right, namely Kaoru nodded, “Yeah.”
“Are we going to be OK?” asked the other one.
“Hikaru, we will be OK.”
Kei smirked, “Are you both seeing someone up there?”
“Yeah! Mommy!” beamed Hikaru, looking up at Kei.
“Hikaru, mommy told us not to talk to strangers”, whispered the one who was called as Kaoru. It was clearly in hearing range but he smiled at the comment.
He started to chuckle to himself.
They remained silent but one of them talked again, “Kaoru, why does he look like us?”
“I don’t know, Hikaru”, answered the other one.
Kei noticed what they were talking. They did look the same as he was when they were little especially those eyes. Their hair colour was slightly different than his but he assumed that the world is a funny place to live as you encountered different people.
The elevator’s doors soon opened and they had reached their floor. Both the twins were already out as soon as the door opened without thinking how dangerous it was.
He heard the receptionist spoke, “You kids aren’t allowed in here.”
“B-but, we want to see mommy!” whined Hikaru.
It didn’t take him a minute to reach the desk. He saw the receptionist was on the phone while filing her nails. She didn’t seem to pay attention that he was already infront of her.
“Excuse me. But these boys are with me,” he cleared his throat. The receptionist, a woman in her late twenties, dropped the phone and her lower jaw hung opened. Probably too shocked to see such a handsome man in her life. He already noted how people especially the female species react toward him. He was already used to such situation.
“A-Ah, yes. But I need your name first before letting you in,” the receptionist was stuttering. She got out a pen nearby and a book.
“Fujisaki Kei. And who might you be?” He leaned forward, smiling dazzling at her.
“Minase. Retsu Minase.”
“Well, then, Minase. Please be sure to pack your things tomorrow because you aren’t needed here anymore,” Kei said before leaving the receptionist completely blunt.
The twins blinked in total confusion. Maybe what he did was probably too much but workers like her weren’t good for the company’s image. Besides, there were a lot of other people who would die to get employed. So he wasn’t really worried about a replacement at all.
The twins approached him.
“Wow, Mister! Thank you very much!” Kaoru exclaimed.
Hikaru added, “You are very nice, Mister!”
“Kaoru? Hikaru? What are you two doing here?” The trio turned to see where the caller was coming from. A man with dark blue haired with spectacles stood by the entrance. He was wearing a casual look; a green polo shirt with khaki pants and running shoes. The look on his face, he didn’t look delighted to see them and—
“Kei?”
“Hasegawa! How long has it been?” Kei approached him, giving a friendly hug.
Makoto returned the hug but his eyes were looking out for the boys who was just a minute ago five metres away from him. He turned to see that the twins were already heading into the office.
“Kaoru, Hikaru. Don’t run off like that. Wait!” Makoto yelled, forgetting that he, himself was inside an office. The people working inside their cubicle caught his attention.
Makoto sheepishly muttered a ‘sorry’ to them.
He chuckled, “Wow, they are quite handful. I didn’t know they were yours!”
Makoto turned back to Kei, “Well, y-yeah. Lemme get back to you soon. But it’s great that you’ve come home safely.”
‘Home,’ the word itself left echoes inside his mind. What was home to begin with? Did he actually think that he was returning home, here in Japan?
